Feeling an immediate kinship with the protagonist’s quest to understand her ambivalence towards motherhood, Emma began translating the novel into a theatre work combining music, text, movement and video projection.

It’s seen workshops in Hudson, New York and New York City to Nashville, Tennessee and Sydney, Australia with an array of talented artists—dancers, musicians, actors, and writers.

In 2023, at Nashville’s Coloseum, it found its definitive form—a compelling cabaret-style piece of physical theater with integrated projections.

An Ambivalent Woman of Thirty-Seven represents the culmination of years of exploration— a powerful, evocative narrative around the complexities of womanhood, existential questions, and the enigmatic pull of generational legacies.
